Rutherford's a record breaker

Home

In a big year for a man who holds all the major outdoor titles, Greg Rutherford started in some style indoors on Friday night as he broke the British long jump record in his first competition of 2016.

Rutherford was competing in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when he produced a brilliant world-lead of 8.26m with his second jump having started with 7.96m.

With the time difference back home, he tweeted a message to his 170,000 followers with the good news they could wake up to.

Rutherford broke the record of 8.18m which Chris Tomlinson jumped in 2008 and it means he now holds both the indoor and outdoor marks, this leap going alongside his 8.51m from April 2014.

His previous indoor best was 8.17m and later, he wrote:

With his victory at the IAAF World Championships in Beijing last summer, Rutherford added that gold to his Olympic, Commonwealth and European triumphs.
