Seven European athletes have been nominated for the 2020 World Athletes of the Year awards with the winners to be announced at the virtual World Athletics Awards 2020 on Saturday 5 December.
The shortlist was chosen by an expert international panel and a three-way voting process will determine the finalists on both the men’s and women’s side.
The World Athletics Council’s vote will count for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and the public votes, the latter conducted across World Athletics’ social media platforms, will each count for 25% of the final result.
Voting for the Female World Athlete of the Year closes at midnight on Sunday 15 November. At the conclusion of the voting process, five men and five women finalists will be announced by World Athletics.
The last European winners of this accolade were Nafissatou Thiam from Belgium on the women's side in 2017 and Renaud Lavillenie from France on the men's side in 2014.
Here is a rundown of the European nominees and how to vote for them.
Women's nominees
Femke Bol (NED)
-Went unbeaten in six races in the 400m hurdles
-Ran a world leading 53.79 in the 400m hurdles in Papendal
-Finished the year with six of the top seven fastest times in the 400m hurdles
Sifan Hassan (NED)
-Broke the world record for the hour in Brussels with 18,930 metres
-Shattered the long-standing European 10,000m record with 29:36.67 in Hengelo, the fourth fastest time in history
-Won over 5000m in Ostrava in 14:37.85
Laura Muir (GBR)
-Went unbeaten outdoors in three races at 1500m
-Clocked a world lead of 3:57.40 in Berlin and broke the four minute-barrier in her two other races at the distance
-Also clocked 1:58.44 for 800m indoors and 2:30.82 for the 1000m outdoors
Men's nominees
Armand Duplantis (SWE)
-Broke the world pole vault record with 6.17m and 6.18m during the indoor season
-Surpassed Sergey Bubka’s world outdoor best with 6.15m in Rome
-Went unbeaten in 16 competitions indoors and outdoors
-Cleared 6.00m or higher in a record-equalling 10 competitions in 2020
Daniel Stahl (SWE)
-Set a world lead of 71.37 on home soil in Sollentuna
-Won 18 of his 20 competitions in the discus
-Achieved seven of the 12 best marks in 2020
Johannes Vetter (GER)
-Achieved the second longest throw in history with the current specification javelin with 97.76m in Chorzow
-Won nine successive competitions across August and September
-Achieved five of the six longest throws in history, including three 90 metre-plus throws
Karsten Warholm (NOR)
-Broke his European 400m hurdles record with 46.87 to move within one-tenth of Kevin Young’s world record
-Went unbeaten in 10 races at all distances in 2020
-Finished the year with the six fastest times in the 400m hurdles
