Lea Sprunger and Alex Wilson were named Swiss Athletes of the Year at the third edition of the Swiss Athletics Night in Luzern on Sunday (4).

Sprunger was crowned female Swiss Athlete of the Year for the second season in succession. The 28-year-old won her specialist event at the European Championships in Berlin with victory in the 400m hurdles and she also excelled on the flat, setting national indoor records over 200m (22.88) and 400m (51.28) as well as a Swiss outdoor record over 400m (50.52).

Sprunger will be looking for a second European title in seven months at the European Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 2019. She will be one of the favourites for the 400m title.

On the men’s side, Wilson was named Swiss Athlete of the Year. Also 28, Wilson improved his Swiss 200m record five times, taking it all the way down from 20.37 to 20.04 to win bronze at the European Championships behind Türkiye’s Ramil Guliyev and Great Britain’s Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake.

The women’s 4x100m sprint relay team which finished fourth at the European Championships in 42.30 - just 0.01 shy of their Swiss record set in the Lausanne Diamond League where they claimed victory - were named the Team of the Year. World U20 800m and 1500m bronze medallist Delia Sclabas was also named Youngster of the Year.
