  • Ståhl crowned Swedish Athlete of the Year

Daniel Ståhl was among the big winners at the annual Swedish Athletics Gala held at the Stockholm Waterfront on Wednesday (22) night.

The world discus silver medallist was named Swedish Athlete of the Year for the first time ahead of European indoor long jump silver medallist Michel Torneus and world 1500m finalist Meraf Bahta.

Ståhl just missed out on the world title at the IAAF World Championships in London by two centimetres but the 25-year-old still produced the second best throw of his career of 69.19m to ensure the first major medal of his career.

His best result of his career - and the best mark in the world last season - came on home soil in Sollentuna where he surpassed Ricky Bruch’s 33-year-old national record with 71.29m to move to ninth on the world all-time lists. This record-breaking performance was recognised as the best performance achieved in a Folksam Grand Prix event in 2017 along with Lovisa Lindh’s national 1000m record of 2:35.15 in Gothenburg.

StÃ¥hl’s coach Vesteinn Hafsteinsson was fittingly named Coach of the Year.

World U20 pole vault record-holder and European U20 champion Armand Duplantis and improving middle-distance runner Hanna Hermansson were named Breakthrough Athletes of the Year.
