Two nights after finishing second to Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres in the Rabat Diamond League, Sweden’s Daniel Stahl reversed the outcome on home soil at the Sollentuna Grand Prix, a European Athletics Classic Permit Meeting, on Tuesday (18).

Stahl’s series was littered with no-throws and despite the unhelpful wind conditions which saw the competitors throwing into an unfavourable tailwind, the Swede approached the 70 metre-line with his two valid throws.

Stahl opened with 68.52m before improving to 69.12m in the third round. Both of his valid efforts would have been sufficient to defeat the thrower who surpassed Stahl’s Diamond League record in the Moroccan capital on Sunday evening with 70.78m.

Dacres had three throws in the 66 metre-range - his best effort coming in the final round with 66.79m. Germany’s Olympic champion Christoph Harting was third with 64.13m.

“I travelled all day yesterday from Morocco and I got two good throws this evening so it was fun. It was a good competition and I just wanted to win today,” said Stahl who famously set a national record of 71.29m in Sollentuna two years ago.

The crowd was treated to a succession of high quality Swedish victories across the programme last night. Fresh from winning the Rome Diamond League with a national record of 4.76m, Angelica Bengtsson won the pole vault with 4.48m before one attempt at 4.68m which was scuppered by the deteriorating conditions.

On the track, Andreas Almgren continued his return from injury with victory over 1500m in a lifetime best of 3:39.68 ahead of Indian record-holder Jinson Johnson (3:39.69) and Serbia’s Elzan Bibic (3:39.89) and Lovisa Lindh in the women’s 800m in 2:01.79 from Norway’s Hedda Hynne (2:02.61).

'Now I have a month to build the form,' said Almgren who is looking to contest either the 800m or 1500m at the IAAF World Championships in Doha. 'Hopefully I will be a few seconds faster than now.'

Hejnova defeats Petersen in Copenhagen

Zuzana Hejnova continued her promising start to the summer campaign with an emphatic victory over home favourite and Olympic silver medallist Sara Slott Petersen at the Copenhagen Athletics Games, a European Athletics Classic Permit Meeting, on Tuesday (18).

Hejnova, who is sixth on the 2019 world list with 54.82, won in the Danish capital in the 400m hurdles last night in 55.18 with Petersen lacking race sharpness on her season’s debut, finishing in second in 56.81.

'It's a long season,' said Slott Petersen who has been suffering from food poisoning which forced her to withdraw from the Rome and Oslo Diamond League. 'It will come. I'm an optimist. There is plenty to build on.'

Slott Petersen is part of the Danish team for the European Games in Minsk which begin next week. She will contest the mixed 4x400m relay in the Belarusian capital.

However, there was a home win in the 1500m for Anna Emilie Moller. Fresh from setting a national record and European U23 record of 9:24.21 in the 3000m steeplechase in Oslo last week, Moller stepped down in distance to win the 1500m in 4:13.42 ahead of Kenyans Jarinter Mwasya (4:14.61) and Josephine Chelangat (4:20.87).

In the last round of the discus, Kristin Pudenz upset German teammate and European silver medallist Nadine Muller - 62.33m to 61.40m - and in-form Norwegian Ola Stunes Isene won the men's discus with 63.21m.
