  • Stanek launches a world-leading mark of 22.17m in Dusseldorf

Czech Republic’s Tomas Stanek missed out on a medal by five centimetres at the IAAF World Championships in London last August but he will be expecting to make amends at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham which begin on 1 March.

Stanek already held the world-lead in the shot put with 21.61m in Ostrava but he revised that mark to 21.98m in the second round at the PSD Bank Meeting in Dusseldorf on Tuesday (6) evening.

But then came a throw which puts him in some very rarified company: 22.17m in the third round. Not only has Stanek ensconced himself inside the world’s all-time top-10, only East Germany’s Ulf Timmermann (22.55m) and Switzerland’s Werner Gunthor (22.26m) have gone further among European shot putters.

His throw will have undoubtedly piqued the interest of some of the big beasts of the event. Stanek’s throw in Dusseldorf yesterday evening was in excess of Tom Walsh’s winning throws in London last year and at the 2016 World Indoor Championships and further than both his and Olympic champion Ryan Crouser’s indoor lifetime bests.

World bronze medallist Stipe Zunic from Croatia was second with a national indoor record of 21.13m with European indoor champion Konrad Bukowiecki - who has been shunted down one place on the European indoor all-time lists - third with 20.73m.

Spanovic makes amends for Karlsruhe; Lisek beats Kendricks again

Ivana Spanovic produced five no-jumps in Karlsruhe on Saturday evening and after beginning her series in Dusseldorf in a similar fashion, normal service was resumed in the third round when the reigning European indoor and outdoor champion hit the sand at a world-leading 6.77m.

Spanovic then produced the second longest jump in the world this season with 6.74m, followed by 6.72m in the sixth round which would have tied the world lead at the start of the day. Germany’s Sosthene Moguenara was second again with 6.68m.

Piotr Lisek was the world’s best vaulter indoors last year when he cleared 6.00m for the first time before claiming the European indoor title in Belgrade and the Pole will be aiming to claim another title under the roof in Birmingham next month.

He defeated reigning world champion Sam Kendricks for the second time in the space of a week, clearing 5.86m on his second attempt to Kendricks’ 5.78m. Lisek then had three attempts at a world-be world-leading mark of 5.91m.

It was a good night for the Polish contingent in Dusseldorf. Adam Kszczot claimed his seventh successive victory over 800m on this track in 1:46.47 and European 1500m champion Angelika Cichocka ran a well-measured race to finish second in her specialist event in a season's best of 4:06.35.

Philip and Baji claim sprint wins

European indoor champion Asha Philip continued her good early season form with victory in the 60m in 7.17 ahead of reigning European U23 champion Ewa Swoboda in 7.20 and world 110m hurdles bronze medallist Balazs Baji won the 60m hurdles on the lean in 7.64.

The women’s 60m hurdles has been the most competitive event in the early weeks of the indoor season. After finishing second to Sharika Nelvis in Karlsruhe, Christina Manning reversed the outcome - and improved her world-lead in the process - with 7.78 to Nelvis’ 7.80.

The domestic rivalry between Germans Pamela Dutkiewicz and Cindy Roleder will extend all the way through until the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships and on this occasion, Dutkiewicz marginally finished ahead of Roleder in third in a European-leading 7.83 with Roleder fourth in 7.85.
