  • Tamberi closes his season with a 2.30m clearance in Pescara

It has been a big year for Italian high jumper Gianmarco Tamberi, even if he did suffer the disappointment of missing out on a medal at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships by a few centimetres.

But by finishing his season with a 2.30m clearance at the weekend at the Italian Championships in Pescara, he bowed out with his third successive competition at going over that height - or even higher.

His season’s best of 2.33m came in Eberstadt at the end of last month and this victory will send him into a winter of training knowing his career is in the right place again since he returned to the sport following his shattering injury just before the 2016 Olympics - and just after winning the European title in Amsterdam.

Last year he returned with a best of 2.29m but now that he has regularly showed he has can break 2.30m. Next on the radar for Tamberi could be the 2019 European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow.

Elena Vallortigara, who has improved to 2.02m this season, cleared 1.91m to win the women's high jump title and former world U20 bronze medallist Roberta Bruni continued her comeback with a 4.35m clearance in the women's pole vault.

In the 400m hurdles, Jose Bencosme won the men’s race in 49.52 and Yadisleidy Pedroso took the women’s crown in 55.62.

Muir finishes season on a winning note

Laura Muir once more showed all the tenacity which brought her the European 1500m title as she won on the roads in Stockton-on-Tees on Saturday (8) in what has been a superb year for her.

Muir triumphed at the Great North CityGames Mile in 4:33 from the Netherlands’ European 10,000m silver medallist Susan Krumins who was given an identical time. Jess Judd was third in 4:35.

The event staged the day before the Great North Run as part of a special weekend of athletics, Muir tweeted her delight - and relief - about the past nine months.

Muir is set to be the biggest star of the European Indoor Championships in Glasgow in March. Muir won a 1500/3000m double in Belgrade last March and she will defend one of those titles next year.

On the track at the Great North City Games, European 100m silver medallist Reece Prescod won the straight 150m in 14.87 – just six hundredths outside the British best. Other highlights included Holly Bradshaw’s 4.55m clearance in the pole vault while Greg Rutherford called time on his career with 7.38m in the long jump.

A strong cohort of British middle distance runners were also in action in the Fifth Avenue Mile in New York on Sunday. As Muir won 1500m gold in Berlin, teammate Jake Wightman took bronze and he was celebrating again after a late season victory in New York.

Wightman won in 3:53.6 ahead of multiple global medallist Nick Willis from New Zealand (3:54.2) with another Brit Neil Gourley third. '2018 has been a good one to me, but I'm glad this long season can now come to an end,' tweeted Wightman, who also won a medal for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast in April.

Filippidis and Guillon-Romarin star in Schaan

Street athletics was very much a theme this weekend with the Golden Fly Series moving to Schaan, Liechtenstein on Saturday where Greece’s former world indoor champion Kostas Filippidis won the men’s pole vault with 5.66m from Adam Hague with 5.60m.

French record-holder Ninon Guillon-Romarin was victorious in the women’s event with 4.60m over Switzerland’s Angelica Moser with 4.45m.

At the Lonskiy Memorial special high jump meeting in Berdychev, Ukraine, there were home wins for Kateryna Tabashnyk with 1.93m while 2.40m performer Andriy Protsenko won with 2.15m.
