European Athletics would like to reassure Member Federations about safety concerns surrounding the European Champion Clubs Cup Track & Field and European Cup 10,000m in Mersin, Turkey, after receiving guarantees from the Turkish Athletics Federation.
Fahrettin Yildiz, General Secretary of the Turkish Athletics Federation, assured European Athletics that all safety guarantees will be fulfilled.
“We will provide all necessary measures for the athletes, officials and spectators from the arrival to the departure of all participating teams,” wrote Yildiz in a letter to European Athletics.
“Security teams will be deployed at the main hotel, competition venue and official airport.”
Mersin is located 150km from the Syrian border, with the area well protected from the conflict zone.
The events held on 28-29 May and on 5 June are being organised with the full support of the city including Mayor Burhanettin Kocamaz who is an avid sports enthusiast.
The city has heavily invested in sporting facilities in recent years having staged the Mediterranean Games in 2013. The Mersin population is very enthusiastic and there will likely be a lot of fans in attendance on the days of the events.
Mersin had already hosted the European Champion Clubs Cup T & F Senior Group A events last year with elite athletics conditions for all those taking part.
The Local Organising Committee in Mersin has said it is committed to hosting some of the best European athletes and that it will be a great pleasure for all competing teams.
