Less than six weeks after winning the bronze medal at the World Championships with a national record of 6636, Anouk Vetter from the Netherlands closed her season with a commanding victory at the prestigious Talence Decastar meeting this weekend.

Vetter held the overnight lead in the heptathlon and she maintained her advantage across the final three events, tallying a score of 6363 to defeat Hungary’s Xenia Krizsan (6282) and Cuba’s Yorgelis Rodriguez (6126).

Vetter launched herself into medal contention at the World Championships in London with a massive javelin throw of 58.41m and the 24-year-old excelled once again in throws, producing the longest marks of the competition in the shot put (14.86m) and javelin (52.49m).

Kevin Mayer was expected to be the star attraction of the weekend but the world champion had to cancel his homecoming due to fatigue. This left Canada’s Damian Warner to claim the victory with 8252 ahead of Germany’s Kai Kazmirek (8020) and Ukraine’s Oleksiy Kasyanov (8016).

Reh breaks German U23 record

Konstanze Klosterhalfen has broken a gamut of German U23 and senior records this season but on Sunday, it was Alina Reh’s turn to add her name to the record books.

Only 20, Reh smashed her lifetime best by some six minutes with a solo victory in the Ulm Half Marathon on Sunday in 71:21. Not only did she claim the outright victory, Reh also improved Sonja Krolik-Oberem’s national U23 record of 71:42 set in 1995.

While Reh told Leichtathletik.de that she is aiming to move up to the marathon at some point in her career, the track will remain her focus for the foreseeable future.

After winning the 3000m and 5000m at the European U20 Championships in 2015, Reh had made steady progress through the ranks, claiming a silver medal over 5000m at the European U23 Championships and reaching her first senior final over 3000m at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade.

Meanwhile, Arne Gabius was the leading European finisher in the Copenhagen Half Marathon on Sunday, a race which has been given a five-star certification from European Athletics Running for All.

On the road to the Frankfurt Marathon on 29 October where he will be aiming to strengthen his case for selection ahead of the European Championships in Berlin, Gabius finished 17th in a season’s best of 62:31 in a race won by Bahrain’s Abraham Cheroben in 58:40 - the fourth fastest time in history.

Pohle claims domestic plaudits ahead of Linke

Hagen Pohle finished twelve places behind Christopher Linke in the 20km race walk at the World Championships in London last month but he had the beating of his more favoured compatriot in the 10,000m walk at the German Championships in Diez on Saturday.

Pohle, the former European U20 champion at the distance, clocked 39:39.45 to finish comfortably ahead of Linke (40:10.08) while European U20 silver medallist Teresa Zurek won the 5000m walk in 23:43.16.

Elsewhere, two-time European indoor shot put champion Anita Marton from Hungary maintained good form into the third weekend of September, taking victories in the shot put (18.15m) and discus (57.47m) in Szentes while Giorgi Olivieri set an Italian U18 hammer record of 76.53m with the 5kg implement in San Benedetto Del Tronto on Sunday.

World bronze medallist Petr Frydrych also concluded his season with victory on home soil in Domazlice on Friday with a good effort of 83.69m.
