  • Warholm and Ingebrigtsen rewrite the record books at Norwegian Championships

Just over a month into the New Year and world 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm and multiple European U20 champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen are once more setting some amazing standards for both them - and the sport - to follow.

Warholm and Ingebrigtsen rewrote the record books once again across the weekend at a Norwegian Indoor Championships in Baerum which will long stand in the memory.

Warholm broke his national 400m record for the second week running while Ingebrigtsen, 17, claimed a brace of titles and broke the long-standing European indoor U20 record in the 3000m.

At the Dimna Games in his home city of Ulsteinvik last weekend, Warholm clocked 45.88 on his season’s opener but the 21-year-old shaved nearly three-tenths off that mark in Baerum, stopping the clock at another national indoor record and European-leading mark of 45.59.

Warholm will not compete at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham which begin on 1 March but he will try and lower his world indoor 300m hurdles best of 34.92 in Tampere, Finland next week. Few will bet against him on the basis of his early season form. “It gives a good indicator for the future,' he said.

Ingebrigtsen had a typically busy weekend, contesting three finals in the space of 24 hours. He began his campaign by winning the 1500m title by nearly seven seconds in 3:42.75, just missing his older brother Henrik’s championship record of 3:42.31. That will surely come in the years ahead - unless one of his brothers get there first.

The following morning, Ingebrigtsen produced a sparkling run in the 3000m, stopping the clock at a European indoor U20 record and outright lifetime best of 7:56.74. He was back on the track at the end of the programme but he just missed a hat-trick of titles, finishing second to Thomas Roth over 800m, 1:51.26 to 1:52.01.

Ingebrigtsen will compete over 1500m at the IFAM Meeting in Ghent next weekend when he will try and secure the World Indoor Championships qualifying standard of 3:39.50.

Warholm and Ingebrigtsen were not alone in making history as on Sunday. Helene Ronningen ran a national indoor 200m record of 23.41 to complete the sprint double having won the 60m in 7.37 the day before. Jonathan Quarcoo triumphed in the men’s 60m in 6.70.

1:45.43 European 800m lead for de Arriba

Spain’s Alvaro de Arriba had been knocking on the door of the podium before winning 800m bronze at last year’s European Indoor Athletics Championships in Belgrade and now he has taken another step forward.

Fittingly in Salamanca on Saturday (3), De Arriba smashed his indoor personal best in his birthplace with a superb 1:45.43 to move to the top of the European lists and fourth on the 2018 world lists behind Kenyans Emmanuel Korir (1:44.21) and Michael Saruni (1:45.19) and Donavan Brazier (1:45.35) of the United States.

De Arriba, 23, had begun the day with an indoor lifetime best of 1:46.63. It was quite a run, and the second best ever by a Spaniard indoors.

The record itself has stood the test of time, since Antonio Manuel Reina ran 1:45.25 at the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Vienna in 2002.

Veteran sprinter Angel David Rodriguez produced his fastest performance over 60m since 2013, clocking 6.63.
