  • Warholm scoops three awards at the Idrettsgalla

The accolades keep on rolling in for reigning world 400m hurdles champion Karsten Warholm who was the big winner at last night’s Idrettsgalla ('the Sports Gala') which was staged at the Hamar Olympic Amphitheatre.

Warholm won the Rising Star crown at the European Athletics Golden Tracks award ceremony in Vilnius, Lithuania last October and claimed the same award at the IAAF Awards in Monaco one month later.

His performances over the last twelve months were recognised domestically last night as he claimed three awards at the annual ceremony. He was named Male Athlete of the Year across all sports, beating an athletics-heavy shortlist which included world 1500m bronze medallist Filip Ingebrigtsen and European marathon record-holder Sondre Nordstad Moen.

Warholm also won the highly regarded Athletes’ Prize - based solely on votes from top athletes from across all sports in Norway - and he also prevailed in a public vote. Warholm’s coach Leif Olav Alnes was also recognised at the award ceremony where he was named Coach of the Year.

The highlight of Warholm’s season was the IAAF World Championships where he became the youngest ever winner of the 400m hurdles title, clocking 48.25 to defeat reigning European champion Yasmani Copello from Türkiye and Olympic champion Kerron Clement.

Warholm also won the European U23 title in Bydgoszcz in a championship record of 48.37, just one day after winning silver in the 400m. He broke the 49-second barrier on seven occasions, finishing his international season with a second place finish in the Zurich Diamond League with a national record of 48.22.

One of Warholm’s aims next year is to break the 48-second barrier, a feat only achieved by ten European athletes. 'I think it's realistic and I'm training to find out if it's realistic. The only way to figure it out is just to do it really,” he said.
