  • Who and where: six key events to follow this weekend

From world record-holders competing in Gothenburg to exciting up-and-comers competing in Lucerne and Ljubljana, the next few days will offer plenty of excitement to athletics fans as the European calendar gathers pace. We have picked up six key events and athletes to watch and how to follow them.

Duplantis v Lisek in Gothenburg
World record-holder Armand Duplantis faced France’s Renaud Lavillenie from afar at the Impossible Games in Oslo last month but the world record-holder will face one of his principal rivals in person in Gothenburg on Saturday afternoon.

Duplantis cleared 5.86m on his outdoor season’s debut in Oslo and the Swede will need to bring this sort of form to the Ullevi Stadium to ensure victory over two-time world outdoor medallist Piotr Lisek from Poland who also cleared 6.00m last year and defeated Duplantis on a number of occasions on the Diamond League circuit. Ben Broeders from Belgium also competes.

Initially in Louisiana during the early weeks of lockdown, Duplantis has been training in Uppsala over the last month where he has said his training hasn’t been quite so interrupted by restrictions caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

One more competition for Tamberi
Competitions in Italy are still taking place behind closed doors but the summer season is in full swing again after a belated start due to the coronavirus.

Gianmarco Tamberi will be taking part in his third sanctioned competition of the season in Rieti on Saturday when many of Italy’s top athletes will be in action again.

After clearing 2.30m in Ancona last weekend, Tamberi wasn’t planning to compete again until August but the reigning European indoor champion is looking to consolidate the form he showed on Sunday. 'After 2.30m in Ancona I am looking for stability,' he said.

Tamberi has fond memories of Rieti. He cleared 2.36m at the Italian Championships in 2016.

Tortu, Re and Pozzi confirmed for the track
While Tamberi is aiming to consolidate his early season form in the high jump, there could be some fast times on the track as well.

Among those making their season’s debuts in Rieti are Filippo Tortu in the 100m, Davide Re in the 100m and 200m, Luminosa Bogliolo in the 100m hurdles and reigning world indoor champion Andrew Pozzi from Great Britain in the 110m hurdles.

The Raul Guidobaldi Stadium in Rieti has been the scene of eight world records over the years and will also be staging the European Athletics U18 Championships which have been postponed to 26-29 August 2021.

Focus of attention on combined eventers in Lucerne
European U20 decathlon champion Simon Ehammer caused a stir last weekend when he bounded out to a massive lifetime best of 8.15m in the long jump. The 20-year-old will be back in action in Lucerne on Friday (3) evening when he will contest both the 110m hurdles as well as the long jump on the path to his first decathlon of the season.

Switzerland’s leading crop of heptathletes are also competing in individual events. Geraldine Ruckstuhl, Caroline Agnou and Annik Kalin will all compete in the 100m hurdles in Lucerne with Ruckstuhl also in action in the javelin, Agnou in the shot put and Kalin in the long jump.

Leading Slovenian athletes report for duty in Ljubljana
Kristjan Ceh suffered his first loss of the season in Eisenstadt on Thursday (2) evening but the 21-year-old should produce another victory at the Slovenian Cup in Ljubljana this weekend. Ceh has already made a significant breakthrough this year, surpassing the long-standing European U23 record in the discus with 68.75m in Maribor last month.

Other field event highlights include another head-to-head between Lia Apostolovski and Marusa Cernjul in the high jump while Neja Filipic is back in action one week after setting a lifetime best of 14.22m in the triple jump. Tina Sutej also makes her outdoor season’s debut in the pole vault.

On the track world 3000m steeplechase finalist Marusa Mismas contests the 800m and 1500m while her training partner Klara Lukan, the reigning European U20 5000m champion, has entered the 3000m and 5000m.
