After another spectacular year, where she retained the Olympic title and broke the world record once more, hammer thrower Anita Wlodarczyk has been rewarded again.

For the first time, Wlodarczyk has finished top of Poland´s Sports Person of the Year Poll.

Having completed a hat-trick of European titles with victory in Amsterdam in July with 78.14m, Wlodarczyk, 31, then broke her own world record with a distance of 82.29m to triumph at the Olympics in Rio.

On 28 August 2016, she threw 82.98m, setting a new world record just two weeks after the Olympics at the 7th Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Warsaw, a European Athletics Permit Meeting.

It is the 82nd edition of the poll and there was great success for athletics.

In third behind Wlodarczyk was discus thrower Piotr Malachowski, who regained the European discus crown in Amsterdam, having previously been the champion in 2010, and then went on to win Olympic silver in Rio.

Krzysztof Kaliszewski, who guided Wlodarczyk, was honoured too by being named as Coach of the Year, while Newcomer of the Year is javelin star Maria Andrejczyk, 20, the 2015 European champion who finished fourth in Rio having broken the national record with 67.11m in qualifying.

There was also an award for Shot put legend Tomasz Majewski, 35, the double Olympic and European champion indoors and out, who retired last summer.
