That Christina Schwanitz secured the gold medal inside a buzzing Scandinavium Arena was no huge surprise. The giant German did after all come into the competition as pre-event favourite, boasting five of the six longest throws in the world this year. Yet perhaps the manner of her triumph – in which she upgraded on her silver medal won at the last edition of these championships two years ago – did surprise.

Daniele Greco had always looked the man most likely to win the triple jump gold here after his outstanding qualifying performance, and so it proved. But no one could have predicted the manner in which the Italian would claim his title as he effectively secured victory with a massive fourth round effort of 17.70 metres, eventually finishing 40cm clear of his nearest challenger.

Pole vaulter Holly Bleasdale denied Anna Rogowska a place in history in Göteborg as she won gold in a vault-off. Poland's 2009 world champion had sought to become the first woman to retain this title, but had to settle for silver after failing to clear 4.67m and then seeing the 21-year-old Preston athlete, ten years her junior, achieve that height.
