Olympic long jump gold medallist Greg Rutherford talks cars and cookery | 07.10.2012

Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis both won gold medals on a night at the London 2012 Olympic Games that provided what can quite rightly be called greatest hour in British athletics history, and their triumphs helped them become named as the European Athletics male and female Athlete of the Year for 2012 this week.

However, it's important not to forget the man who provided the other triumph of that hat-trick of victories in barely 40 minutes on the first Saturday of the athletics programme in London: long jumper Greg Rutherford.

Rutherford, who took the 2006 European Athletics Championships silver medal as a teenager but then struggled for several years with injuries, took the lead in London with a second round effort of 8.21m and then clinched the gold medal two attempts later when he leapt out to 8.31m.

In an often light-hearted interview with the British newspaper The Guardian, the gold medallist and co-owner of the best mark in the world in 2012 with his British record of 8.35m talks about his background as a teenage footballer, as well as his skills in front of an oven and behind the wheel of a car.
