High jumper Robbie Grabarz made a huge improvement this year, becoming the first British man to win a European title in his event for 62 years when he triumphed in Helsinki and he also got the high jump bronze medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Grabarz scaled 2.37m at the Samsung Diamond League meeting in Lausanne at the end of August to equal Steve Smith's long-standing British record and go equal third on the 2012 world list and he also won the lucrative Diamond Race for consistency in the world's top meetings.

His feats lead to Grabarz being short-listed for the male European Athlete of the Year, an award which was eventually won by his compatriot Mo
Farah, whose achievements were recognised at the European Athletics Awards Night in St Julians, Malta, on Saturday.

In an interview with the British newspaper The Independent on Wednesday, which can be read here, Grabarz talks about the crucial decisions he had to make last winter concerning whether he wanted to continue in the sport and his ambitions for 2013, which could include bidding for a gold medal at the 2013 European Athletics Indoor Championships as he plans to compete indoors next year.
