1954 European Athletics Championships medallist Frank Sando dies at 81 | 20.10.2012

News has reached European Athletics that the former British international long distance runner Frank Sando died from cancer on Saturday at the age 81.

Sando won the 10,000m bronze medal at the 1954 European Athletics Championships, a memorable race won by the Czech legend Emil Zatopek.

His greatest victories were at cross country and Sando was the winner of the 1955 and 1957 International Cross Country Championships, the forerunner of the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, and a silver medallist in 1953, 1956 and 1959.
