European Athletics is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of French shot-putter Yves Niaré.


Niaré, 35, who held the national record of 20.72m, died in a car accident on Wednesday morning.

His national record was set in Versailles in May 2008 and the following year he achieved his greatest success. At the 2009 European Athletics Indoor Championships in Torino, Niare won silver with an effort of 20.42m as Poland's Tomasz Majewski won gold with 21.02m.

He was then fourth at the Mediterranean Games and 27th at the IAAF World Championships in Berlin.

Niare also competed at the world championships in 2005 and 2007, and at the Olympic Games in 2008 without reaching the final.
