The Germany athletics federation (DLV), on behalf of the city of Berlin, on Tuesday handed over its application to host the 2018 European Athletics Championships.

DLV General Secretary Frank Hensel presented the official documents to European Athletics President Hansjörg Wirz on the sidelines of a European Athletics Executive Committee meeting in Frankfurt.

President Wirz said, "We are very happy that Berlin has offered us the opportunity to continue the tradition of athletics in Germany. We will now examine the application documents and then begin the evaluation phase.”

The decision to award the 2018 European Athletics Championships will be made at the European Athletics Council meeting on 2 November in Zurich.

“We are on the final straight before the awarding of the European Athletics Championships,” said Hensel, a European Athletics Council member. “Only a few months remain before the decision is taken. We will use this remaining time to prepare an excellent presentation for the Council meeting.”
