Death of Hungarian jumper Gyula Paloczi | 30.01.2009

Former European Indoor Long Jump champion Gyula Paloczi of Hungary has died, according to a release on the official website of the Hungarian Athletics Federation.

The untimely demise of Paloczi at the age of 46 brings down curtain on the glittering career of the most successful jumper Hungary has ever produced.

His best indoor performance a jump of 8.15m that fetched him the European Athletics Indoor Championships gold in 1985 in Greece. Paloczi also registered his best outdoor mark of 8.25 in the same year.

He also won the Long Jump silver medal at European Indoor Championships in 1983 at home.

He also competed in triple jump in later stages of his career and registered a personal best of 16.87 in 1993.

He was a Hungarian National champion in Long Jump three times (1984, 1986, 1990) and Triple Jump champion during 1988-90, and 1993-94.

It was a mark of his versatility that he also scaled 2.11m in High Jump.
