European Athletics Director General Christian Milz on Tuesday met with Lazar Popovski, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia Agency Director for Youth and Sport, to discuss the promotion of athletics among young people in the country.

Milz took the opportunity to discuss the topic during a site visit to Skopje to check on preparations ahead of the 2013 European Athletics Congress to be hosted in the country’s capital.

“I am encouraged by the talks I had with Mr. Popovski regards the future of athletics in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia,” said Milz. “The country is committed to developing our sport among youngsters with 10 multi-purpose sports venues set to be built within the next year that will have either 100 or 200m running tracks and high jump and long jump facilities.

“The country is also now in the position to start bidding to host athletics competitions and European Athletics wholeheartedly encourages them in their endeavours.”

FYR Macedonia athletics federation (Atletska Federacija na Makedonija) General Secretary Dejan Angelovski and International Secretary Kire Sinadinovski accompanied Milz on a tour of conference facilities in Skopje.

“We are pleased to see that Skopje has a high standard of facilities and is committed to hosting a well-run Congress for European Athletics in 2013,” said Milz.

The non-elective 2013 European Athletics Congress will take place on 13 April.
