Volunteer Spotlight: Fredrik Roalsø
Fredrik Roalsø is a guy on the go. A final year student working to complete his degree in engineering, he has recently moved to Kristiansand, Norway, where in addition to establishing himself in a new town, he is pursuing his passion for athletics by joining the local athletics club and coaching young athletes one day per week.
But despite his busy life-style, he has also found time to register enough work hours to qualify for the European Athletics - UNESCO Bronze Certificate, which recognises his volunteer contribution to the sport as a member of the European Athletics Young Leaders Community.

In 2011, before his big move, Fredrik participated in the Norwegian athletics federation’s innovative year-long Ung:Leder (Young Leader) programme, which aimed to prepare 100 young people for roles necessary to run the sport in the future.
As a part of the programme, he and his friend Bergliot Byre organised an athletics summer school, called Fiks Feirrige Ferie – Summer School 2011, for more than 50 children aged 6 to 14 in a partnership with the city of Stavanger, his former home town, and the IL Skjalg athletics club.
The project, where he picked up most of his qualifying hours for the certificate, was such a success that he and Bergliot are planning to stage it again this year.

Recently, athleticscommunity.org caught up with Fredrik for a short chat.
Hi Fredrik. Why don’t you tell us a little about what you are doing these days.
I am a student of the university in Agder. This semester I’m writing my Bachelor degree on LEAN Construction so that I can become a construction engineer. But I am also working with the athletics team in my new club, Kristiansand KIF, were I coach once a week.
