SPAR European Cross Country Championships

The most important cross country event on the European calendar attracts the best distance running talents from across the continent in the U20, U23 and senior categories for both genders with a mixed relay the most recent addition to the programme.

The 2023 edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Brussels on 10 December with as many as 8000 people in attendance in a muddy and Laeken Park for the 29th edition of the championships. 

The event finished on a historic note as France's Yann Schrub became the first French athlete to win the senior men's title while individual bronze medallist Robin Hendrix also led Belgium to their first ever senior men's team title.

Great Britain topped the medal table yet again with seven gold medals, including three individual title. Megan Keith won the women's U23 race by an incredible winning margin of 83 seconds, by far the biggest in the history of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships while Innes FitzGerald and Will Barnicoat won the women's U20 and men's U23 titles respectively.

Norway's Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal won the senior women's title in dominant fashion for her third successive title and her 10th individual medal in championship history. Other winners in Laeken Park included France in the mixed relay and Denmark's Axel Vang Christensen who outsprinted the hot favourite Niels Laros from the Netherlands for the men's U20 title. 

The 2024 edition of the SPAR European Cross Country Championships, which will mark the 30th anniversary edition, takes place for the first time in Antalya, Türkiye while the 2025 edition has been awarded to Lagoa, Portugal.
