  • Bekh-Romanchuk concludes campaign with a 6.91m victory in Doha

For the second successive year, Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk from Ukraine rounded off her season with a stellar performance in Doha.

Bekh-Romanchuk won silver at the World Athletics Championships last season and she proved successful in the Doha Diamond League on Friday (25) albeit in a different venue to the Khalifa Stadium which hosted last year’s championships.

Prior to the decisive sixth round when the scorecard was wiped clean, Bekh-Romanchuk was second in the standings with 6.79m but the Ukrainian demonstrated her ability to perform under pressure again with her last jump of the final.

In the winner-takes-all sixth round, the reigning world and European silver medallist sailed out to a season’s best of 6.91m, just two centimetres shy of her outdoor lifetime best which dates back to 2016.

“I am happy with my jump and I am delighted to win in Doha. The season hasn't gone the way everyone expected but for me I am glad to be ending it on a high,” said Bekh-Romanchuk who also produced an outright lifetime best of 6.96m during the indoor season.

She added: “The Olympics is my next focus just like everyone else and I hope to perform well in Tokyo. I am going to take a short break and then start preparation for 2021 in earnest.”

Khaddi Sagnia produced the longest jump of the competition prior to the decisive final round with a second round 6.85m but the rules of the competition were such that the Swede finished third after Nigeria’s Ese Brume produced a superior mark in the sixth round - 6.68m to 6.55m.

As expected there was a Swedish winner in the pole vault with Armand Duplantis rounding off his landmark season with a first-time clearance at 5.82m to win on countback from two-time world champion Sam Kendricks and Renaud Lavillenie from France.

One week after setting the highest outdoor vault in history with 6.15m in Rome, Duplantis couldn’t quite replicate those heights in Doha but the 20-year-old was still able to end his season unbeaten, notching up his 16th successive win of his campaign.

“It’s been a fantastic season and I enjoyed sharing the moment tonight with the guys. We've not been able to see each other this season as we often do due to obvious reasons. I enjoyed the jump and the rivalry with Sam. It's been fun with him as we have always got back at each other,” said Duplantis.

Duplantis’ tally of 10 competitions at 6.00m or higher this season also matches the record set by Sergey Bubka back in 1991.
