  • Borås to host the 2019 European Athletics U20 Championships

Sweden will host both the European Athletics U20 and U23 Championships in 2019 and one week after Gävle stages the older age-group event, the baton will be passed a week later to the city of BorÃ¥s, which will stage the U20 championship between 18-21 July next year.

Among the stars of the event could be the 11 European athletes – five men and six women – who climbed the podium at the recent IAAF World U20 Championships Tampere 2018 and who are still eligible to compete in this age group.

Two of them, German long jumper Lea-Jasmin Riecke and Bulgarian triple jumper Aleksandra Nacheva, were victorious in Tampere and will be expected to challenge strongly for another gold medal on the continental stage while middle distance runners Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Delia Sclabas won two medals apiece of a different hue in Finland and will actually be defending European U20 titles in Borås.

Ingebrigtsen, from Norway, won the 5000m and 3000m steeplechase gold medals in Grosseto last year while Sclabas, from Switzerland, was the 3000m champion in the Tuscany city in July 2017.

In addition, history has already told us that many of the champions from the Gyor 2018 European Athletics U18 Championships will also be medallists just one year after their first European triumph.

It whets the appetite thinking about watching Myhaylo Kokhan in action again at a major championship.

The 17-year-old Ukrainian set a world U18 hammer best in Gyor and went on to take the silver medal in Tampere using the heavier 6kg implement, into the bargain improving his best to 79.68m.

By next summer, he should be well over 80 metres and even could be challenging for the world record in this age group which, at the time of writing stands, at 85.57m to Egypt’s Ahraf Amgad El Sufy.

The last European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto witnessed two world U20 records so who’s to say we will not see further superlatives to savour in BorÃ¥s?

BorÃ¥s – which, by the way, is the hometown of the famed Swedish multi-events exponent Carolina Kluft – will welcome athletes, officials and guests from the length and breadth of Europe and for visitors who want to look further than the action in the athletics stadium, there are a number of monuments which date from around the city’s foundation in the early part of the 17th century.

Many historic sites are close by the city centre’s Krokshall Square, which in turn is in sight of the picturesque Viskan river.

The city itself has average July temperatures of between 12-22 degrees Celsius, although showers are a distinct possibility even in the summer. However, if the rain stays away then good conditions are anticipated for all disciplines and for the entertainment at the end of the day.
