Poland’s Konrad Bukowiecki provided one of the international highlights of the Czech Indoor Gala, a European Athletics Indoor Premium Permit Meeting, in Ostrava on Wednesday (5).

Bukowiecki, who took the lead in the first round with 20.94m, was supplanted in the fifth round by Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri with 21.11m but the Pole responded with the last throw of the competition. Taking to the throwing circle for the sixth time, Bukowiecki launched the 7.26kg implement to 21.88m which surpassed both the world lead of 21.52m and the meeting record of 21.61m.

This was the third best mark of Bukowiecki’s career indoors, bettered only by his winning effort of 21.97m from the Belgrade 2017 European Athletics Indoor Championships and his indoor lifetime best of 22.00m in Torun, the host city of the 2021 European Indoor Championships, in 2018.

Fabbri, who won silver behind Bukowiecki at the Gavle 2019 European Athletics U23 Championships last summer, also achieved a significant result as he surpassed the 21-metre line indoors for the first time in his career. His outright lifetime best of 21.32m was set in Parow, South Africa last month where the Italian was based on a warm weather training trip.

In a high quality competition, Portugal’s Francisco Belo set a season’s best of 20.94m to finish third, one place and two centimetres ahead of the previous meeting record-holder Tomas Stanek.

Success for the Czech contingent in the sprints

Lada Vondrova demonstrated once again why she is considered such a terrific prospect on both the flat as well as the hurdles. Only 20, the European U23 400m silver medallist won the 400m in a lifetime best and meeting record of 52.25 to equal the European lead held by Norway’s Amalie Iuel.

Pavel Maslak is yet to open his indoor season but there was still a home victory in his absence in the men’s 400m. Michal Desensky was also rewarded with a lifetime best of 46.65 to beat European indoor bronze medallist Tony Van Diepen from the Netherlands in 46.79.

In the women’s 60m, multiple Czech champion Klara Seidlova equalled her lifetime best and Czech record of 7.23 and there was also a notable performance from Stanislava Skvarkova in the 60m hurdles as she improved her Slovakian record to 8.09.

Bibic smashes another Serbian middle distance record

One week after breaking the long-standing Serbian indoor 3000m record with 7:47.03 in Karlsruhe, Elzan Bibic gained ownership of the national indoor 1500m record in Ostrava. Bibic broke the tape in 3:38.94 to become the first Serbian athlete to break the 3:40-barrier indoors for the 1500m, beating Morocco’s Brahim Kaazouzi by almost two seconds in 3:40.73.

European indoor and outdoor champion Miltiadis Tentoglou broke the eight metre-barrier again in the long jump, winning with a meeting record of 8.04m and Slovenia’s Tina Sutej maintained her excellent early season form, following up her 4.67m clearance at the weekend with a 4.62m clearance to beat Venezuela’s Robeylis Peinado on countback.

Ukraine’s Yuliya Chumachenko also cleared a season’s best of 1.92m to win the high jump.
