  • Dadic smashes 6000 points-barrier in one hour heptathlon in Amstetten

Ivona Dadic set herself the target of breaking the 6000 points-barrier in the one hour heptathlon in Amstetten on Thursday (23) evening and the Austrian comfortably exceeded this total, scoring a European leading mark of 6235 points.

'A normal heptathlon in two days is exhausting, a one-hour heptathlon hurts incredibly. But when I see my performance, the pain is gone in one fell swoop,” beamed Dadic.

Despite the truncated format, Dadic’s score was still the second highest of the season thus far, bettered only by Cuba’s Adriana Rodriguez who leads the 2020 world list with 6304 points.

Dadic was on schedule to break the 6000 point-barrier from the first event in a competition to celebrate the one-year-to-go countdown to the Tokyo Olympics. She began her campaign with 13.64 in the 100m hurdles, 1.80m in the high jump and 14.84m in the shot put, the latter only 13 centimetres shy of her recent lifetime best.

The 26-year-old also impressed with 47.60m in the javelin before she hurried to the start-line for the 800m. According to the official rules, all events must be started within the hour and Dadic’s performance would be recognised after the gun fired with six seconds left on the clock.

The 500 spectators who were allowed entry into the stadium were treated to a thrilling conclusion to the heptathlon as Dadic overhauled her teammate Sarah Lagger on the finish-line in the 800m, 2:19.10 to 2:19.13.

Lagger, who has been struggling with back problems this season, finished second with 5784 points. Switzerland’s Geraldine Ruckstuhl was expected to be Dadic’s closest rival in Amstetten but the European U23 champion fell out of contention after no-heighting in the high jump.

Reigning world heptathlon bronze medallist Verena Preiner was unable to compete due to an ankle injury.
