European pole vault champion Armand Duplantis was crowned male Rising Star at the IAAF Athletics Awards 2018 in Monaco on Tuesday (4).

Duplantis was also crowned male Rising Star at the Golden Tracks award ceremony in Lausanne in October alongside European 1500m and 5000m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen from Norway.

Duplantis cleared a championship record of 5.82m to win the IAAF World U20 Championships in Tampere, Finland in July less than a month before ascending to senior stardom with gold at the Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships.

The Swede broke his world U20 record three times with first-time clearances at 5.95m, 6.00m and 6.05m to also surpass the championship record and move to second on the world outdoor all-time lists behind world record-holder Sergey Bubka.

Duplantis was presented with the award by former Olympic triple jump champion and compatriot Christian Olsson.

Former meeting director of the Zurich Weltklasse Andreas Brugger was presented with the IAAF President’s Award and Spanish photographer Felix Sanchez Arrazola received the Athletics Photograph of the Year award for his photo of Ethiopia’s Selemon Barega winning the Cross Internacional Juan Muguerza in Elgoibar.
