  • Europe v USA match set to be staged in Minsk in 2019

An exciting Ryder Cup-style match between Europe and the USA will be staged ahead of the IAAF World Championships in Doha in the Dinamo National Olympic Stadium in Minsk, Belarus, on 9-10 September 2019.

The agreement has been signed between European Athletics and USA Track & Field, and European Athletics has started operational work with the Belarus Athletic Federation ahead of the event.

European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen said: “We are proud to announce there will be a match for the first time since the 1960s. We are going to include every track discipline up to the 3000m for men and women (excluding 4x400m). We will have all the throws, jumps and a 4x100m relay, and there will be a mixed medley relay.'

'We welcome the opportunity for our athletes to compete in a team match leading up to the 2019 World Championships,” said USATF CEO Max Siegel. 'We look forward to visiting Belarus for this great competition.'

In principle, the winner of each individual event at the European Athletics Team Championships Super League 2019 as well as the first 3 athletes from the season list starting 1 June 2019 as at 12 August 2019 will be selected for Team Europe in each individual event, provided they will accept their selection, they are not injured or ill, or any other reasons preventing them from participating. If, for any reason, one of the first four qualified athletes will not be available, the next ranked athlete will be selected.

Up to 10 Belarussian athletes (host country) shall be part of Team Europe. (In those events where Belarussian athletes may be selected, only 3 athletes may be qualified from the season list).

Belarus has staged a number of high-quality and well-organised major athletics events in recent years.

President Hansen was highly impressed with all aspects of the European 10,000m Cup in Minsk in June 2017 and the Minsk Half Marathon, a five-star certified road race by European Athletics Running for All, is one of Europe’s fastest growing road races with 35,000 runners taking part this year.

Next year’s race will be held on the same weekend as the Europe v USA match.

The match will take place in the newly renovated Dinamo National Olympic Stadium, which was reopened in June 2018 and has the capacity to hold 22,000 spectators.

President of the Belarus Athletic Federation Vadim Devyatovskiy said: “We are glad that Belarus has got a big honour to hold this historic major competition. We believe the stadium will be sold out. The match will give a huge boost to the further development of athletics in Belarus,” he said.

Athletics will also form part of the European Games in Minsk, with a DNA team competition taking place 23-28 June 2019.
