European Athletics has today confirmed its full support for the dates selected for the re-scheduled World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon of 15-24 July 2022, allowing a full month before the European Athletics Championships which will take place in Munich from 15-21 August 2022.
Commenting on the World Athletics announcement, European Athletics Interim President and World Athletics Council Member Dobromir Karamarinov said: “I would like to thank World Athletics President Sebastian Coe and Council for their expert handling of this matter. For athletics fans, and athletes alike, the summer of 2022 now promises to be a six-week feast of sporting events beginning with the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, then the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and culminating with our European Athletics Championships in Munich.”
European Athletics Vice President and Interim Chair of the European Championships 2022 Board Libor Varhaník added: “First and foremost I would like to thank World Athletics President Sebastian Coe, CEO Jon Ridgeon and Council for all their hard work these past few days in finding suitable new dates for the World Athletics Championships in 2022.
“We held intensive and forthright discussions with all related stakeholders that were highly appreciated and I am pleased to say that for the European Athletics Championships in Munich the outcome was very positive, with the event maintaining its original scheduled dates of 15 to 21 August 2022.”
The Paris 2020 European Athletics Championships which are scheduled to take place from 25-30 August are currently under evaluation after the European Athletics Executive Board requested the Local Organising Committee to carry out a detailed feasibility study of the event, with input from the relevant national authority bodies, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
The European Athletics Council is scheduled to meet next on 7 and 8 May, via video conference, and will consider this feasibility study.
