In response to the outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19), European Athletics has established a task force to assess the impact of the disease on athletics events in Europe and to provide advice to athletes, organisers and other stakeholders.

Led by European Athletics Medical Commission Chairman Dr Pedro Branco, the European Athletics Coronavirus Task Force held its first meeting by conference call on Monday afternoon (2).

The 90-minute call covered the national situations in countries set to host European Athletics events in 2020 and there was discussion of information provided by the World Health Organisation and national authorities.

The Task Force was set up at the request of European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen who has requested that the group provide regular updates on the evolving situation so that the European Athletics Executive Board can take any necessary decisions.

At the end of the meeting, Dr Branco said that the Task Force’s current advice is that athletes and organisers continue their preparations for all European Athletics events as normal unless they are officially informed otherwise.

The Task Force will meet regularly to monitor developments in the situation and adjust its position as appropriate.

In the meantime, European Athletics encourages all members of the European athletics family to follow the information and guidance provided by local health authorities and the World Health Organisation.
