The European Athletics Event and Competition Commission, chaired by European Athletics Council Executive Board Member Toralf Nilsson, held its first meeting of 2019 in Aarhus, Denmark alongside the IAAF World Cross Country Championships on Saturday (30).

The commission discussed the achievements of the 2015-2019 Event and Competition Commission and made recommendations for the next commission. European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen thanked all the commission members for their support and work during the last four years and President of the World Cross Country Championships LOC Jakob Larsen also listened in on the discussions.

The commission addressed the continental one-day meeting circuit – which was discussed internally within the commission - and also with two members of the IAAF Office who attended the meeting for further discussions.

The one-day cross country and indoor meeting seasons were reviewed and the new applications for 2019 and 2020 considered.

There was also further discussion about the qualification principles for the Paris 2020 European Athletics Championships and the commission also made recommendations to include the 20km race walk into the European Championships programme in Olympic years starting from 2024.

The changes recently implemented by the IAAF for U20 Championships - such as the inclusion of a mixed 4x400m relay and the Gundersen method for the final discipline in combined events - were also discussed.

The different topics will now go for approval to the Executive Board and/or the Council, where relevant.
