  • Finland and Sweden split the honours at the annual Finnkampen match

Honours were shared in Tampere on Saturday between Finland and Sweden at the Finnkampen, a two-day match which has been staged since 1925.

Finland narrowly won the men’s event for the 46th time, scoring 206 points to 202 for their first title since 2011 while Sweden were clearer champions in the women’s competition - 216 points to 194 - as they lifted the title for 38th occasion, and the 16th time in 18 editions.

But it was a Swedish athlete who produced the best performance of the day as world leader and world and European silver medallist Daniel Stahl won the discus with a throw of 68.00m from teammate Simon Petterson with 63.16m.

But the Finnish men had a series of good victories. 2014 European javelin champion Antti Ruuskanen triumped with 82.25m ahead of Oliver Helander (79.22m) and other successes included Oskari Lehtonen’s 20.96 in the 200m, Elmo Lakka’s 13.72 in 110m hurdles and Simo Lipsanen’s 16.31m in the triple jump.

The 10,000m race walk was one of the best events of the weekend as Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom produced the second quickest time of 2018 - 38:39.28, also a European leading mark - to beat Finland’s Veli-Matti Partanen in 38:44.13. Both times were also national records.

Charlotta Fougberg contributed handsomely to the Swedish tally in the women’s division, winning the 3000m steeplechase in 9:45.31 before winning the 10,000m the following day in a lifetime best of 32:34.47.

Elsewhere on the track, Hanna Hermansson won the 800m in 2:02.64 while former European bronze medallist Lovisa Lindh stepped up in distance to win a tactical 1500m in 4:48.32.

In field events, both Erika Kinsey and Sofie Skoog cleared 1.90m in the high jump, Khaddi Sagnia win the long jump with 6.45m, Fanny Roos took the shot put with 17.95m and Angelica Bengtsson cleared 4.42m in the pole vault.

Nooralotta Neziri delivered the hosts’ best mark on the women’s side with victory in the 100m hurdles in 13.13 with Annimari Korte (13.23) and Reetta Hurske (13.27) ensuring a Finnish clean sweep.

Haratyk surpasses the 21m line again

Michal Haratyk has enjoyed the best summer of his career thus far after becoming European champion in Berlin and on Saturday (1) he was successful again as he won the shot put at the Polish Team Championships in Inowroclaw.

But his victory was not enough to give his side, AZS-AWF Krakow victory, as they finished third on a day when Lublin triumphed ahead of AZS-AWF Warszawa.

Haratyk, who will be competing at the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava next weekend, produced a best of 21.21m as he beat Konrad Bukowiecki with 19.92m.

Other highlights included Karolina Koleczek winning the 100m hurdles in 12.93 ahead of Klaudia Siciarz (13.07) and Klaudia Kardasz winning the shot put with 17.13m.

At the Slovakian Club Championships in Dubnica, European U23 200m champion Jan Volko took a sprint double - 10.37 in the 100m and 21.22 in the 200m - and Marcel Lomnicky went out to 74.26m in the hammer.

In the Cardiff 10K, there were wins for Dewi Griffiths (29:11) while Lily Partridge put the disappointment of a DNF at the European Championships marathon behind her with a 33:27 win.
