Andrius Gudzius was named Lithuanian Sportsman of the Year for the second year running at the Lithuanian Sports Gala on Thursday (20).

Gudzius added the European discus title to his world title in Berlin this August, winning in the sixth round ahead of Sweden’s Daniel Stahl. Gudzius was nominated sprint canoeist Arturas Seja, rower Mindaugas Griskonis, swimmer Danas Rapsys and weightlifter Zygimantas Stanulis.

Gudzius said: 'Last year I won gold at the World Championships only by two centimetres and this year in Berlin – by 21 cm with the last throw. This award is like these titles because you are trying to win it but you can’t plan it.

“It is impossible to win titles without a great team. My closest team members are the coach Vaclovas Kidykas and physio Tomas Bendaravicius. I want to thank my wife Dovile and my two children because they realise that I don’t go somewhere out of home for no reason, I go away to bring glory to Lithuania.'

Gudzius’ coach Vaclovas Kidykas was fittingly named Lithuanian Coach of the Year for the second year in a row.

European javelin bronze medallist Liveta Jasiunaite finished second in the women’s category behind swimmer Ruta Meilutyte who was crowned Lithuanian Sportswoman of the Year.

The recently retired Austra Skujyte was also presented with her belated bronze medal from the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Skujyte initially finished fifth in the heptathlon but she was promoted into the medals after two of her rivals retroactively failed doping tests.
