Hammer throwers and European champions Anita Wlodarczyk and Wojciech Nowicki were awarded the Zlote Kolce 2018 (Golden Spikes) as Polish athletes of the year in at a glittering gala in Warsaw on Tuesday night (30).

Wlodarczyk won for a record ninth time, every year since 2009 with the exception of 2011. By contrast it was the first time that Nowicki had been voted the men’s Polish athlete of the year.

The women’s hammer world record holder topped the voting ahead of her fellow Berlin 2018 European Athletics Championships gold medallists Justyna Swiety-Ersetic and Paulina Guba, who were second and third respectively, while Nowicki beat middle-distance runners Adam Kszczot and Marcin Lewandowski.

The coach of the year was Aleksander Matusinski, who was responsible for the victorious women’s 4x400m team in Berlin.

Swiety-Ersetic, who won two golds in Berlin in the space of barely an hour and a half when after winning her individual title then anchored Poland’s women’s 4x400m quartet, received a special award of the Presidential Cup in honour of the country’s 100 years of independence.

Revelation of the Year was IAAF World U20 Championships 200m bronze medallist Martyna Kotwila, who later in the season won the national 200m title in 22.99 to break Irena Szewinska's Polish U20 record which had stood since the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games.
