  • Hejnova sets world leading time in the 300m hurdles en route to Doha

Zuzana Hejnova is the top-ranked European and fifth on the 2019 world list and with Doha only a few weeks away, she is warming up for a tilt at what could be an amazing story.

The two-time world 400m hurdles champion has not made the podium outdoors since winning the second of those titles in Beijing in 2015 but she is heading to Doha, Qatar in brilliant form.

At home in the Rieter Meeting at Usti Nad Orlici on Saturday (17), the Czech star ran over 300m hurdles and won in 39.61, the fastest time in the world this year.

An athlete who has battled injury and returned over the past few seasons, Hejnova tops the European list with 54.11 from the Diamond League in Lausanne and seems on the cusp of breaking the 54 second-barrier for the first time since 2018.

Her teammate Barbora Spotakova is a three-time world javelin champion but the reigning world champion had to settle for second behind Nikola Ogrodnikova who beat her more illustrious compatriot with 59.38m to 59.25m.

Former world champion Vitezslav Vesely won the men’s javelin with 78.97m while Tomas Stanek triumphed in the shot put with 20.65m.

Kanter wins the Estonian discus title once again

You cannot keep a great man down it seems. Even though he has announced his retirement, Estonia’s Gerd Kanter is still winning titles.

The 2008 Olympic discus champion, who celebrated his 40th birthday in May, won the national championships for the 13th time by reaching 58.60m in Tallinn on Saturday.

Magnus Kirt produced the best performance of the weekend, winning the javelin with 87.57m, before flying to Birmingham for the Diamond League where he finished third with 85.69m.

Polish athletes were busy in different parts of the country at the weekend. In Warsaw on Saturday, Konrad Bukowiecki showed his form ahead of Doha by winning the shot put with 21.33m at the fifth Zygmunt Szelest Memorial.

It was there, too, that Piotr Malachowski’s 64.79m was enough to beat Robert Urbanek with 64.29m in the discus while Olympic fourth-placer Maria Andrejczyk triumphed in the javelin with 59.56m.

Karolina Wejman had a day to remember in Bydgoszcz on Sunday as she broke the national U20 pole vault record with a clearance of 4.31m and in Sieradz, the Polish 5000m crowns went the way of Krystian Zalewski in 14:10.73 and Katarzyna Jankowska in 15:49.68.

Hungary’s 2012 Olympic champion Krisztian Pars returned to action at the Papp-Csermak Hammer Memorial in Tapolca but the victory went to Bence Halasz with 78.13m. Pars reached 75.97m for second as Reka Gyuratz was first in the women’s competition with 69.97m.

In Falun, Fredrik Samuelsson won the Swedish decathlon title with 7873 points and Bianca Salming won the heptathlon crown with 5610

In Beeskow, Christopher Linke won the German men’s 10,000m race walking title in 38:57.94 as Teresa Zurek won the women’s 5000m race walk title in 22.08.89.
