  • Henrik and Jakob Ingebrigtsen to challenge Norwegian 5km record

Under normal circumstances the Ingebrigtsens would be lacing up their track spikes at this point of the season but instead they will be taking to the roads on Wednesday (20) in pursuit of another national record.

Henrik and Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be lining up in a 5km race in Stavanger - just 15 kilometres north of their hometown of Sandnes - where they have their sights on the Norwegian record of 13:37 which is held by Sondre Nordstad Moen.

“We had to make sure that the course was measured and the competition approved before we said yes,” said their coach and father Gjert as reported by ABC Nyheter.

The race has been fully adapted to comply with health and infection control rules. The athletes will line up in grid format and there will be a half-a-minute gap between the two pools.

For both Henrik and Jakob, this will be their first competitive race of the season. Henrik hasn’t raced since reaching the 5000m final at the World Athletics Championships while Jakob will be competing for the first time since winning his fourth U20 title at the SPAR European Cross Country Championships in Lisbon.

This will also be Jakob’s racing debut as a fully fledged senior after graduating out of the U20 ranks at the end of the 2019 season. He was due to compete indoors but was forced to cancel a handful of scheduled appearances due to an injury.

Neither Henrik nor Jakob have contested a competitive 5km in their careers thus far although Jakob made a sizzling debut over 10km last October when he eclipsed the Norwegian record with 27:54 at the Hytteplanmila with a 2:37 final kilometre.

Jakob and Henrik are also slated to compete over 2000m at the Impossible Games in Oslo on 11 June which is being held in place of the Bislett Games which cannot take place in its usual format this year.

Filip Ingebrigtsen is also due to compete at the Impossible Games although he is yet to confirm which distance he will contest.
