Anita Hinriksdottir has rewritten the European Athletics junior records with another stunning 800 metres run.

Iceland’s sensational young middle-distance star triumphed at the national championships on Sunday in a time of 2:01.77, breaking the old mark she had set in January 2014 by 0.4 seconds.

Such is the talent of Hinriksdottir, 19, that it has taken her only 13 months to lower a record that previously had stood for 27 years, with the long-standing 2:01.85 by Gabriela Sedlakova first broken by the Icelandic runner with her run of 2:01.81.

But now at the new indoor arena in Hafnarfjordur, she has produced a performance which shows the level she is progressing at.

Not only does the defence of her European Athletics Junior 800m title await in the summer in Eskilstuna, but Hinriksdottir will head to the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Prague next month to gain even more experience on the way to becoming a senior.

When she won the junior title in Rieti in July 2013, it came during the most amazing seven days of her athletics career as the previous week she had won gold at the World Youth Championships in Donetsk. They were titles which led to her being named the female Rising Star Athlete of the Year.

Last summer she gained a big flavour of the senior stage at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich when she made the semi-finals of the 800m, where she was sixth in her race and missed out on the final.

But now she is running faster than ever and looks set for another memorable year.
