  • Levchenko and Shukh among the standout names on Ukrainian team for Glasgow

Ukraine has named a team of 33 athletes to compete at the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 1-3 March.

Ukraine won four medals at the European Indoor Championships in Belgrade two years ago including bronze in the women’s high jump courtesy of Yuliya Levchenko, one of three major medals during her breakthrough season in 2017.

Fresh from winning the Ukrainian indoor title in Sumy, Levchenko forms part of a strong triumvirate in the event alongside Kateryna Tabashnyk and Iryna Herashchenko who have season’s bests of 1.99m and 1.97m respectively.

Their team also includes two more returning medallists: long jumper Sergiy Nykyforov and pole vaulter Maryna Kylypko who both won bronze medals in their respective events. Nykyforov is joined on the team for Glasgow by reigning European U23 champion Vladyslav Mazur who defeated Nykyforov for the Ukrainian title.

Another athlete to excel at the Ukrainian Indoor Championships was Alina Shukh who won the pentathlon title with a world-leading score of 4581 points. Shukh will challenge for her first senior medal after an illustrious age-group career, including European U18 and U20 heptathlon titles and a world U20 title in the javelin.

Other standout names on the team include European long jump silver medallist Maryna Bekh-Romanchuk who improved her lifetime best to 6.85m at the Ukrainian Indoor Championships; European outdoor 800m bronze medallist Olha Lyakhova; joint European leader in the high jump Andriy Protsenko; and former world and European outdoor triple jump champion Olha Saladukha.
