On a clear day in Portsmouth, Eilish McColgan signed off her long and successful season on Sunday (20) by retaining her crown at the Great South Run and in the process breaking her mother’s Scottish 10-mile record.

With a memorable performance for the world 5000m finalist and European silver medallist, McColgan, 28, won in 51:38 from fellow Britons Verity Ockenden, second in 55:15, and Jenny Nesbit, third in 55:18.

In the process, she eclipsed the mark set by mum Liz in 1997 when she ran a 10-mile time of 52:00 and also moved to second on the British all-time list, just behind Paula Radcliffe who had won in Portsmouth in 2008 in 51:11.

“I am smiling from ear to ear,” said Eilish who is coached by Liz, the 1991 10,000 world champion. “When I woke up this morning and I saw the good weather, I could not believe it. I have had two years in a row where the wind has been a bit favourable and I am delighted.”

The wind can be particularly troublesome in the last few miles along the seafront but that was not the case for Eilish, who was cheered all the way by Liz. She tweeted that her daughter has 'only gone and took my record…least still in the family.'

Eilish, who finished 10th in the 5000m final in Doha just a few weeks ago in a 14:46.17 PB, led early on and stretched away to triumph.

In the men’s race, Marc Scott won in 46:58 to beat teammates Ben Connor (47:16) and European U23 10,000m bronze medallist Emile Cairess (47:32). “The plan was always to win the race and I did not mind the time,” said Scott.

This was Scott’s second domestic win in the space of a week after triumphing at the first leg of the British Athletics Cross Challenge in Cardiff on the road to the European Cross Country Championships Trials in Liverpool next month.
