As a prelude to the recently announced signing of a four-year partnership between European Athletics and Mondo, which saw the latter become a Green Inspiration partner of European Athletics and an Official Supplier, the Italian track and sports flooring company held a workshop during the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships.
To an audience of almost 50 stakeholders from Member Federations, athletes and former athletes, Athlete Representatives and existing Mondo customers, European Athletics President Svein Arne Hansen and Mondo Sport Division Manager Maurizio Stroppiana welcomed guests before Mondo representatives demonstrated the technology of the Mondo hydraulic variable banked track.
The track – a unique system that was installed by Mondo for the first time in 1987 at the National Institute for Fitness and Sport in Indianapolis, Indiana, and which is now used at training and high-level competition venues around the world – has also also been installed in Glasgow’s Emirates Arena.
Emirates Arena Facility Manager Mark McIwaine provided testimony to the technology which was in use during the three days of the world’s most important indoor meeting this winter.
"A very important advantage of the hydraulic track system is that the hall can be returned to a flat floor of 5000 square metres in minutes, so that the venue can be used for other sport and non-sport events, maximising the use of the asset.
“Thanks to this system, the Emirates Arena can meet the demands of high-level athletics and guarantee a significant income stream from other events we stage, not to mention the reputational benefits for the venue and the city,” commented Mclwaine.
