Laura Muir got her 2019 season off to a terrific start, clocking 14:52.02 for 5000m at the GAA Miler Meet at the Emirates Arena in Glasgow on Friday (4) evening.
The Emirates Arena will be staging the Glasgow 2019 European Athletics Indoor Championships from 1-3 March and Muir will be in action in front of her home fans during the three day event.
Muir scooped both the 1500m and 3000m titles at the 2017 European Indoor Championships - setting championship records in both events - and while she hasn’t finalised her racing commitments, the 25-year-old will be tough to beat regardless of which event she chooses.
Only eleven female athletes in history - including Muir herself - have run faster for 5000m indoors. Muir clocked 14:49.12 on the same track two years ago and she told reporters after the race her shape is comparable.
“I’m really happy. I think I did the last two kilometres more or less identically to the time when I ran the (5000m) record because we went through 3000m three seconds slower. 2017 was when I was running lots of European records so the fact that I’m in very similar shape to then is really good,” Muir told Athletics Weekly.
Muir was arguably at the height of her powers during the indoor season in 2017. In the build-up to double gold in Belgrade, Muir smashed the European records at both 1000m (2:31.93) and 3000m (8:26.41) - the second and fifth fastest times in history indoors.
Muir will return to action next Saturday at the Great Stirling XCountry where she will represent Great Britain in the mixed 4x1500m relay.
"I'm looking forward to it. There's always a great atmosphere at these cross country events and there's a new venue with Stirling which is exciting as well," she said.
