European fourth-placer and world finalist Simon Pettersson from Sweden set a European-leading mark in the discus in a local meeting in Vaxjo, Sweden on Friday (10) afternoon.

Seven throwers - predominantly from Vesteinn Hafsteinsson’s training group - competed in the discus-only competition and Pettersson produced the highlight of the meeting, launching the discus out to 66.93m in the final round. He had three more throws over the 65 metre line as well.

Not only was Pettersson’s mark a European lead, it was also a lifetime best. He moves to third on the 2020 world list behind Jamaica’s Fedrick Dacres (69.67m) and Colombia’s Mauricio Ortega (67.03m) and fourth on the Swedish all-time list behind training partner Daniel Stahl (71.86m), Ricky Bruch (71.26m) and Stefan Fernholm (68.30m).

“It's hard to compare to a regular season,” said Pettersson who would usually be in Chula Vista, California at this time of the season for warm weather training.

“We had very good conditions today, brilliant sun and good wind. You lose the wind when you are in an arena, it is difficult to compare with a championship. But you have to do the results to think you can do it. It feels like a step in the right direction. I am happy that it became a personal record,” he told SVT.

On the women’s side, former European U23 shot put champion Fanny Roos topped the standings with 52.76m.
