World silver medallist Daniel Stahl has had a summer to remember and this weekend he added another touch of gloss to his glory.

In the year where he broke the 33-year-old Swedish discus record held by their legendary Ricky Bruch, Stahl has now smashed another of the marks set by the 1972 Olympic bronze medallist.

Fittingly, Stahl’s newest achievement came in Stockholm on Sunday as he helped his nation to victory in the traditional match with Finland. With a throw of 67.37m, Stahl, 25, broke the meeting record that Bruch had set in 1973.

Having just turned 25, Stahl will be one of the main contenders to make the podium next year in Berlin when the German capital stages the European Athletics Championships as part of the first multi-sports European Championships in conjunction with Glasgow.

He still holds the world-leading throw of 2017 with his 71.29m from Sollentuna in June when he broke Bruch’s national record by three centimetres.

He missed out on the world title by just two centimetres in London as Lithuania’s Andrius Gudzius triumphed but as he showed in Stockholm, he has had a season of brilliant consistency, capped off at home.

An international match which first took place in 1925, Sweden’s men have now won it six times in a row while the women made it four out of the last five.

Staged at the Olympic Stadium, the men won 261-188 while the women had a record triumph - 232.5 to 177.5. Sweden’s men led after the first day on Saturday by 125-118 and their standout performer was Perseus Karlstrom, who won the 10,000m walk in a national record of 38:57.45 to move to second on the world lists.

But as expected, the away team did triumph in the javelin on the second day with former world champion Tero Pitkamaki going out to 80.28m to claim maximum points for Finland.

Sweden’s women were 98.5 to 84.5 ahead after Saturday and their top performer of the weekend was world and Olympic 1500m finalist Meraf Bahta.

Fresh from setting a lifetime best of 4:00.49 in Brussels on Friday night, Bahta was on double duty, winning the 800m on Saturday in 2:04.41 and the 10,000m on Sunday in 33:00.28.

In the hammer, Ida Storm just missed her Swedish record with her winning throw of 71.26m while Sofie Skoog won the high jump with a 1.91m clearance.

Baji closes season on a winning note

Balazs Baji will enter the winter after an amazing summer topped by his 110m hurdles bronze medal at the World Championships in London and his gold last week at the Universiade in Taipei.

The 28-year-old drew the curtain down on his best season to date, winning on Saturday in the Super Final of the Hungarian Super League where he won in 13.32.

These are good times for Hungarian sprint hurdles as Luca Kozak showed in Taipei with her bronze medal and she won here in Budapest too, taking the 100m hurdles title in 13.39.

Baji’s clubmate Anita Marton was also in form, closing her season with a pair of victories. The world silver medallist from London won the shot put with 18.25m before winning the discus title with 58.04m.

Ingebrigtsen close to European U18 3000m best

Fresh from winning three senior titles at the Norwegian Championships last weekend, Jakob Ingebrigtsen - who turns 17 later this month - broke the national U18 3000m record in Bergen on Friday, winning the Norwegian U18 title in a solo 8:00.01.

Ingebrigtsen, who was also second in the 400m in 51.03, just missed older brother Henrik’s national U20 record of 7:58.15 and he wasn’t too far outside the 41-year-old European U18 best which stands to Hansjorg Kunze at 7:56.4.

A day later, it was the turn of Marcus Thomsen, 19, to maintain his winning ways.

The recently crowned European U20 shot put champion in Grosseto - where he won in a world U20 lead of 21.36m - he was successful again with the 6kg implement, winning with 20.88m.

45 titles and counting for Mockenhaupt

The road racing season is almost in full swing and Germany’s Sabrina Mockenhaupt and Amanal Petros made a good start at the national 10km road championships in Bad Liebenzel on Sunday.

As Mockenhaupt won in 33:38, she banked her 45th German title at any distance, beating Anna Hahner (33:45) and Corinna Harrer (33:48) while Petros won the men’s event in 29:02 from Simon Boch (29:03) and Philipp Pflieger (29:10).
