In a clash between two of Europe's leading sprinters at the Meeting de Marseille on Saturday (3) evening, Jimmy Vicaut recovered from a poor start to come out on top ahead of James Dasaolu on home soil over 100m.

Vicaut, who represents local club SCO Sainte-Marguerite de Marseille, has already broken the 10 second-barrier this season and the 25-year-old confirmed his excellent early season shape with a 10.02 clocking. Cuba’s Yunier Perez finished second in 10.12 with Dasaolu credited with the same time in third.

The joint European record-holder will almost certainly be given the nod to represent France over 100m at the European Athletics Team Championships in Lille Metropole later this month where he will be looking to claim maximum points for the third time in the 100m.

Germany's Pamela Dutkiewicz maintained her early season form with a dominant victory in the 100m hurdles. Fresh from setting a European-leading mark of 12.61 in Weinheim, the European indoor bronze medallist stopped the clock at 12.84 to defeat teenager Ilionis Guillaume, who improved her lifetime best to 13.23 on the road to the European Athletics U20 Championships in Grosseto.

Reigning European indoor champion Kristin Gierisch from Germany went out to 14.16m to win the triple jump while Olympic silver medallist Melina Robert-Michon won the discus with 61.70m.

Reigning European champion Mahiedine Mekhissi opened his season with a third-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase in 8:14.76. 'I had the legs to win tonight but not the confidence,' he said on his comeback from an Achilles injury.

Klosterhalfen breaks two minute-barrier over 800m

A fortnight after opening her outdoor season with a solo 14:51.38 clocking over 5000m in Karlsruhe, Konstanze Klosterhalfen demonstrated her versatility with another eye-catching performance over 800m in Pfungstadt on Saturday.

The European indoor 1500m silver medallist ran aggressively from the gun, passing through halfway in 57 seconds before holding on well on the second lap to stop the clock at 1:59.65 - a lifetime best by nearly two seconds.

The 20-year-old will make her international debut over 1500m at the Rome Diamond League on Thursday where she will face the likes of Olympic champion Faith Kipyegon and double European indoor champion Laura Muir. Klosterhalfen’s coach Stephen Weiss believes she could even challenge the four minute-barrier in her specialist event.

Rutherford 7.93m in Gavardo; Lasitskene 2.00m in Opole

Reigning world and European long jump champion Greg Rutherford went out to 7.93m in the fourth round of the Gavardo Meeting on Sunday (4) afternoon but there are some concerns about the fitness of the Brit after he retired in the fourth round due to an ankle injury.

It was a successful meeting for the British contingent on show with Reece Prescod winning the 100m in 10.11 ahead of Greece’s Likourgos-Stefanos Tsakonas (10.16) and European indoor champion Richard Kilty (10.18) while Danny Talbot won the 200m in 20.31.

Kilty’s fiance Dovile Dzindzaletaite, the reigning European U23 triple jump champion, continued her comeback from maternity leave with a season’s best of 13.86m.

Fresh from clearing a world-leading height of 2.03m at the Eugene Diamond League, Maria Lasitskene was in top form again in Opole, Poland where she cleared 2.00m on Sunday.

At the Meeting of the Stars in Radom on Sunday, Poland’s leading athletes were in good form.

European and world champion Piotr Malachowski went out to a season’s best of 65.90m in the discus; Kamila Licwinko cleared 1.96m in the high jump; Michal Haratyk defeated Konrad Bukowiecki in the shot put 20.71m to 20.63m; and there were 800m wins for Adam Kszczot (1:47.30) and Joanna Jozwik (2:01.53).

Martin takes the plaudits in La Coruna

European U23 silver medallist Alvaro Martin took arguably the biggest win of his career so far in the 20km walk at the IAAF Race Walking Challenge event on home soil in La Coruna on Saturday evening.

Already a two-time Olympian at the age of 22, Martin clocked the second fastest time of his career of 1:19:57 to defeat Sweden’s Perseus Karlstrom (1:20:20), who recently won a bronze medal at the European Race Walking Cup in Podebrady.

Last year’s winner Miguel Angel Lopez won an individual silver medal in Podebrady but the reigning world champion wasn’t in his best form on Saturday, fading to 13th in 1:22:04.
