  • Warholm wins his season's opener over 400m in Ulsteinvik in 45.97

On the day of his 24th birthday, Karsten Warholm won the 400m at his home meeting - the Karsten Warholm International - in Ulsteinvik on Friday (28) evening.

Making his season’s debut, Warholm set a European leading time of 45.97 to win by a clear margin from three-time world indoor champion Pavel Maslak from the Czech Republic in 46.47. “This is the most important season I'm going to have,” Warholm told local reporters after his first and only race of the indoor season.

He added: “It was great fun. I am happy to take the victory, and it is especially wonderful to be able to do it here, in front of everyone I know. With the audience here today, it couldn't have been better.”

Maslak returned to the track later in the programme to pace the 600m which was won by European indoor 400m bronze medallist Tony van Diepen from the Netherlands in 1:17.73.

Other notable performances included European U20 champion Pal Haugen Lillefosse improving his Norwegian indoor U20 pole vault record to 5.70m to finish second to Sam Kendricks who cleared 5.80m.

World silver medallist Yaroslava Mahuchikh from Ukraine finished her indoor season unbeaten by clearing 1.96m to win by two clear heights from Sofie Skoog from Sweden at 1.88m.
