World discus bronze medallist Lukas Weisshaidinger produced a fine season’s opener today (25) in a low key meeting in Schwechat, approaching not only his Austrian record of 68.98m but also the 70 metre-line.

Weisshaidinger competed against two domestic competitors in two back-to-back competitions which both took place behind closed doors in order to adhere to strict competition rules which have been brought about due to the coronavirus.

In the first competition, Weisshaidinger topped the standings with a third round throw of 68.63m to move to second on the 2020 world list behind Fedrick Dacres’ world lead of 69.67m.

He also surpassed the 68 metre-line in the second competition with 68.19m in the third round but his series was very nearly highlighted by an even superior attempt - his fifth round throw of 69.95m being deemed a narrow no-throw after grazing the perimeter of the throwing circle with his toes.

Either way, Weisshaidinger was delighted by his season’s opener, especially due to the changeable conditions. “I really couldn't have asked for a better debut. It's a dream. It was sometimes like a little lottery with the wind but the new ring has already paid off,” he said.

His coach Gregor Hogler said: “Luki even exceeded my expectations today. I wouldn't have thought that he was already scratching his own record at the end of May. Technically, the throws were at the highest level.”
