After missing the European 10km record by a mere five seconds in London earlier this month, Eilish McColgan took ownership of the long-standing record away from Paula Radcliffe at the Great Manchester Run on Sunday (22) morning.

Her record-breaking run came less than a year after McColgan claimed victory on the streets in Manchester in a women’s only European record of 30:52.

Now McColgan holds the outright record after clocking 30:19 to finish a close second behind Kenya’s two-time world 5000m champion Hellen Obiri in 30:15.

McColgan set herself up for a fast time by blasting through the five kilometre mark in 14:54 and even though the European 5000m silver medallist slowed in the second half on the return back to Deansgate, McColgan still came home two seconds inside Radcliffe’s European record of 30:21 - a world record when she set it in 2003.

Speaking to AW after the race, McColgan said: "London was a good experience that gave me a lot of confidence that I could run the record. Today was a different way of running where I went off hard and it was tough to keep that going but I think I’m so much stronger this year that I knew that even though I was tired I could keep going in that final 2km."
