Abeba Aregawi is ready to build on her amazing success in 2013 by writing her name into the record books in 2014.

The Swedish middle-distance runner has hardly put a foot wrong in the last eight months where she has won gold at both the European Athletics Indoor Championships and IAAF World Athletics Championships.

But now she is turning her attention to times - and one in particular.

The indoor world record for 1500m has stood since February 2006 when Russia’s Elena Soboleva ran 3:58.28 in Moscow.

In February of this year, Aregawi came so close to breaking it with her 3:58.40 in Stockholm.

It was the second best time in history but now when she returns to the same Swedish venue on 6 February 2014 she is hoping her moment will arrive.

Aregawi, 23, confirmed her appearance at the XL Galan meeting at the Globen Arena by saying: “I want to set the world record in the Globe.”

Her time of 3:58.40 was a Swedish record which set her up brilliantly for the European Athletics Indoor Championships a few weeks later in Gothenburg where she surged to gold in 4:04.47, a performance so stunning that she won by almost 10 seconds from Spain’s Isabel Macias who was second in 4:14.19.

It was the first major title of her career, but it was just the beginning.

Aregawi then transformed that speed to outdoors where she dominated the IAAF Diamond League circuit in the 1500m to win the Diamond Race and then became world champion with another superb run in Moscow.

Winning in 4:02.67 from American Jennifer Simpson in 4:02.99, Aregawi showed so much tenacity to hold off her closest rivals to prove she is the fastest runner at the distance.

She plans to compete at the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Sopot in March, by which time she hopes to have the world record under her belt.

She has been training in Ethiopia and said it “has gone well. I will soon go back there to continue to prepare myself for the indoor season.”

One in which she hopes to enhance her reputation even further.
