Her gold was one of the most dramatic at last year’s European Athletics Indoor Championships and now Holly Bleasdale wants more of the same.

The Great Britain pole vaulter won the title in Gothenburg in a thrilling jump off before a summer which was curtailed as injury forced her out of the IAAF World Championships in Moscow.

But as she starts her major winter season on Saturday in Scotland, she has her eyes focused on taking her career to new heights.

Bleasdale, 22, is one of the leading names competing at the Glasgow International Match and hopes her form over the next few years will propel her to the top of her discipline.

Her highest mark is 4.87m from Villeurbanne in 2012, the all-time indoor third best.

But she believes it is not out of the question to think of the five metre barrier - a level only cleared indoors by America's Olympic champion Jennifer Suhr, with 5.02m, and world champion Yelena Isinbayeva, with 5.06m outdoors and 5.01m indoors.

Bleasdale said: “I’m not afraid of the five metre barrier. I think quite a lot of girls think because only two have done it, it's out of reach but I really don't think that way.

“If I stay injury free and keep improving then I don't see why I can't jump 5m within the next couple of years.”

In front of a home crowd might not be a bad place to start 'improving' and it will be a full house at the Emirates Arena on Saturday afternoon as Great Britain and Northern Ireland take on the USA, Scotland and a Commonwealth Select.

Bleasdale took gold in Gothenburg when she beat Poland’s Anna Rogowska, the defending champion. Both athletes were tied and a ‘jump off’ at 4.67m was needed to separate the two, they had both previously failed to clear 4.72m.

And now, after the disappointing summer that followed, she is aiming for three medals in the months ahead - in Sopot at the IAAF World Championships, at the Commonwealth Games, back in Glasgow, and then at the European Athletics Championships in Zurich.

Bleasdale, speaking to sportinglife.co.uk, said: 'I had a really good indoor season last year and then got injured and had to watch everyone else compete, which wasn't great, so this season is really important, mainly psychologically.

'Since I started pole vault I have never had to take time off through an injury so to watch the World champs at home was really frustrating.

'But now I’m even hungrier than before. I am fitter, stronger and quicker than I ever have been and vaulting better.'

We look forward to seeing if this renewed motivation translates into results this season.
